Samsul Bahri Menggugat Lyrics

DENGARLAH SAMSOEL BAHRI MENGGUGAT...!

Kala bukit-bukit di Padang Panjang terbakar punah.
Ia pun turun gunung tanpa tergiur para turbah.

Tapaki jejak tilas mereka yang pernah diperah.

Dibombardir konservatisme rigid, tolak tuk digubah.

Samsul Bahri...

Samsul Bahri...

Gemih pun akhirnya emoh mengekori hiu.
Pertanyai buku suci, ludahi tradisi! Hark!

Mas kimpoi ia suguhi rante penjara kaki karat.

Terima tak terima ia tak wawuh rugi.

Todongkan jari tengah ke pelipis calon 'terpilih'.

Bahri menyeringai...

Samsul Bahri...

Samsul Bahri...

Gemih pun akhirnya emoh mengekori hiu.

Pertanyai buku suci, ludahi tradisi!

Gubrislah! Samsul Bahri menggugat...!

*** Syamsul Bahri, is a fictional character in Indonesian classic literature. It's taken from a 1930's roman novel entitled "Siti Nurbaya". In the original story, Syamsul Bahri is depicted as a naïve submissive Indonesian impoverished student who fell in love with a conservatively nurtured girl named Siti Nurbaya. They fell for each other until Siti Nurbaya's parents disapprove their relationship due to an arranged marriage that they set up for Siti Nurbaya with an old seedy polygamous mafia named Datuk Mahringgi, and it's all planned for the purpose of paying debts that her parents had to Datuk Mahringgi. Syamsul Bahri felt really frustrated that he lost hope and took his own life. He was engulfed in a theologically shaped concept of "destiny" and or fate. He gave up his life because he thought that his life was meant to suffer, and God had arranged the whole deal for him. He was a hardline determinist. However, in our version of the story, Syamsul Bahri is depicted as a critical yet optimistic young fellow who doesn't believe in destiny or fate or any predetermined notions. He has faith in himself that when he knows that he will loose Siti Nurbaya for an arranged marriage, he's hurt inside yet he feels relieved and motivated to move on and fulfilling his dreams. In one of the line in the lyrics, I portray Syamsul Bahri going to Siti Nurbaya's wedding, but instead of giving her and Datuk Maringgi that sobbing and devastated look, he gives them (especially Datuk Maringgi) the middle finger and a relieving laughter... Essentially, this song is part of the theme that we try to highlight in our album. And that is, we just want to subvert these Indonesian classic literatures and folktales that c**tivate submission and obedience to socio-cultural and theological institutions, into something critical and empowering. To let people think and decide what's good and bad for them, and not letting social institutions directing your perception of reality. As what William Henley said in his poet "I am master of my fate, I am captain of my soul".
