Death Row Lyrics

[Introduction]
I'd like to do a little prison song now, it's one
written by one of the boys in the show here,
There's been lots of prison songs and railroad songs in country music
over the years, and this is the tragic story of a young feller
waiting to go to death row, and I suppose the main moral of this one
would be that two wrongs never make a right.
Here it is anyway, the tragic story of Death Row.
Oh the warders footsteps echo, they're comin' to get me,
To take me on a journey down to cell block two one D.
This one night stay is over, it's time to go below,
And finalise my judgement in a place they call death row.

Old judgement was passed on me, oh what a fateful day,
They all believed me guilty there's a death, I've gotta pay,
Took a life, I had no right, fella don't you know,
The only way to right your wrong must surely be death row.
(Surely be death row.)
[Short Instrumental]

Oh three weeks of waiting and the time is going fast,
And I make my peace with heaven and turn back to my past,
It seems I had more bad times and for all I've gotta show,
Is a life of crime and prison, now finally death row.

Oh the chaplain says I'd be alright, don't you worry none,
You took a life but God forgives, so in the morning sun,
Faith will overcome your fear to face the final blow,
Two wrongs it seems to make a right, but only on death row.
(Only on death row)
[Short Instrumental]

This morning I awoke, my last day to see,
Now slowly down the hallway outside of two one D,
My last meal awaits me and they'll come to start the show,
And I'll play the starring role, my final act death row.

Oh the warders footsteps echo, they're comin' to get me,
To take me on a journey down to cell block two one D.
And this one night stay is over, they'll come to start the show,
And I'll play the starring role, my final act death row.
(My final act death row.)
